When we get stressed, it’s easy to turn to something dangerous or unhealthy to ease your mind: a cigarette, a bottle of beer, a glass of whiskey, punching holes in your bedroom walls… However, not only are these dangerous (and bad for your foundation), they are also causing you a lot of damage. There are safer and better ways to manage your stress. These things will also help you gain perspective, learn from your situations, and some are even good for your health!
Let’s further inspect some of these great stress management coping mechanisms, shall we?
Exercise
Exercise is a great way to sweat the stress away. You’ll be doing something good for your body and you’ll be giving yourself time to reflect as well.
Reflection
Reflection is a great way to relieve stress and gain perspective. While it might not serve the purpose of de-stressing you at the moment of anguish, it is a good way to end your day and think about what you are going through. That way, you can start off the next day will less stress.
Healthy Snacks
If you’re used to grabbing a cigarette when you are stressed, chances are that you will crave some kind of oral stimulation after you quit smoking – especially when you are stressed. So keep some healthy snacks on hand. If you need, you could also keep some toothpicks nearby. It’s not very classy but it is better than a cigarette.
Dark chocolate is a great choice because it is healthy and…let’s face it: chocolate makes everything better, right ladies?
Listen to Some Calming Music (or Noises)
It’ll be different for everyone but the general consensus is that classical is a great way to relax. You can also try the sound of zen meditation bowls as well. Find a sound application that you can put on your phone. There is a great free app called “White Noise” that has a lot of options.
Take a Quick Walk
Going to the gym for a workout may not be an option but you will (most likely) have the option of walking around. Get up and go to the water cooler for a nice cold drink and then take the long way around back to your desk. Take a walk around the block or around a park. The fresh air will do you good.
